Kindergarten Curriculum
In the past kindergarten teachers in the district worked with large binders of lessons and ideas developed around a theme such as "Sea Life." Each teacher worked through the binders but there was not a consistency from one classroom to the next. With this in mind the kindergarten advisory group convened to align the work. The group, made up of kindergarten, preschool and first-grade teachers worked hard to create a curriculum that is aligned with the work that goes on before kindergarten and the expectations of first grade.

Curriculum maps were developed to define the skills presented in the literacy and math Roadmaps and present benchmarks to guide student learning. Curriculum maps expanded the focus to include literacy, math, science, health, social science, fine arts, technology and social/emotional development. The benchmarks in most of these areas are taught as students are ready and, when appropriate, are related to existing themes.

However, in the area of literacy, students are introduced to the skills and strategies in a prescribed sequential pattern. Because of this the benchmarks are presented in cycles with one cycle building on the previous one.

The following links provide more information on the development of the curriculum maps as well as the maps themselves.

Curriculum Goals
The program will include integration of math, science, art and literacy, to help students to begin making connections between different subjects. The program will allow for choice and flexibility with assignments. This enables students to be part of their learning process and become critical thinkers.

  • To understand and use different skills and strategies necessary to read and write (e.g.; knows names and sounds of letters, uses sounds to read and write words).
  • To understand the meaning of what is read (e.g.; predicts story events, makes connections in stories, and knows real vs. pretend stories).
  • To understand the relationship between addition and subtraction and apply the understanding to create math stories.
  • To use mathematical reasoning to analyze information, make logical predictions, draw conclusions, and check results.
  • To use communication strategies and skills to work effectively with others.
  • To use a diversity of media as a means of artistic expression to deepen understanding of concepts being investigated by the class.
  • To use listening and observation skills to gain understanding.
